Empowering Educators: A Journey Through Storytelling and Social Impact
We recently had the incredible opportunity to host a learning journey workshop for 15 dedicated teachers from Kuo Chuan Presbyterian Secondary School. The workshop was part of their professional development program, and over two days, we shared stories, built storytelling skills, and explored the powerful connection between social enterprises and education. Here’s a glimpse into the engaging experience that unfolded:
Chapter 1: Our Story & Mission at Books Beyond Borders (35 mins)
The journey began with an intimate session where our founder, Randall, shared the story of how Books Beyond Borders came to life. What started as an unplanned solo adventure to Everest Base Camp turned into a mission that supports communities through the power of books and fair trade. It was inspiring for the teachers to hear how a single journey could spark a movement that connects people, cultures, and causes.
Randall shared how the organization's values of education, empowerment, and sustainability are at the core of every initiative, and how these values shape everything we do, from the books we distribute to the social enterprises we support.
Chapter 2: Introduction to Storytelling & The 6 Elements of a Great Story (40 mins)
Next, we dove into the heart of the workshop: Storytelling.
Teachers learned the fundamentals of compelling storytelling, focusing on six key elements that bring stories to life: character, setting, conflict, resolution, emotion, and purpose. This session wasn’t just about theory—it was a hands-on exploration of how these elements can be used to captivate, teach, and inspire others.
The teachers were encouraged to think of stories as tools for education, not just entertainment. Storytelling can make lessons memorable, connect with students emotionally, and ignite creativity in the classroom.
Chapter 3: Craft Your Own Story & Story Relay Game (40 mins)
The final chapter of our workshop was all about practise. The teachers were divided into small groups and given the challenge of crafting their own stories using the six storytelling elements. It was amazing to see how they brought their experiences and creativity to life, from personal anecdotes to fictional adventures.
The highlight of this session was Story Relay section—where each group had to pass their story along, with each teacher adding their own twist to the narrative. It was a fun and interactive way to build teamwork and learn the art of collaborative storytelling.
The energy in the room was infectious as participants laughed, learned, and shared their stories.
